Access to justice is a basic principle of the rule of law. In the absence of access to justice, people are unable to have their voices heard, exercise their rights, challenge discrimination or hold decision-makers accountable. People living in poverty and marginalized groups may not be aware of their legal rights and often lack legal protection and access to mechanisms to remedy their grievances, resulting in increased vulnerability.
Without increased justice, the world will not be able to end poverty, reduce inequality, reach the furthest behind first, create conditions for shared and sustainable prosperity, or promote peace and inclusion. Inequality, discrimination, and exclusion remain severe obstacles to universal human development.
The United Nations are taking all necessary steps to provide fair, transparent, effective, non-discriminatory and accountable services that promote access to justice for all.
